Outside of The Classroom

Outside of my academic career, I engage in a variety of activities that fuel my creativity, passion for adventure, and love of sports.

With the help of friends, I restored a 1938 International one-ton truck, originally from my wife Janet’s family farm, as a special gift for her; it was her grandfather’s harvesting truck, and the restoration has become a meaningful labor of love. Woodworking is another of my hobbies—most recently, I built a contemporary grandfather clock. Traveling is a lifelong passion of mine too; I immigrated to Canada from Ireland as a child and now hold three passports—Irish, Canadian, and US. Over the years, I’ve lived, worked, and traveled in more than forty countries across six continents, with my most recent adventure taking me to the Himalayas in Nepal.

As an outdoor enthusiast, I’m an avid golfer, started telemark skiing and recently returned to sailing with a Weta trimaran. I continue to enjoy running and mountain biking on the trails of Vermont, and I’m thinking of running the Burlington Marathon next year.
